Drug-free bodybuilder from Basingstoke becomes world champion

A BASINGSTOKE man has become the drug-free bodybuilding world champion by winning the international competition in Italy.

Tamlyn Robertson won the Male Physical Athlete title at the World Championships in Florence.

The 30-year-old said he was extremely happy to have won the tile while remaining drug-free throughout his life.

“We [drug free bodybuilders] are a bit smaller than you would expect. We are not an Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, we still look as good, but just in a smaller format,” said Tam, as he is called.

A logistics coordinator by profession, Tam said working from home has helped him hit the gym regularly for the past two and a half years.

“I work out in the gym five days a week – around 6-8.30pm. That’s not a lot of cardio. I only do 10,000 to 15,000 steps a day and then two hours of weightlifting,” he said.

“And then it’s just about making sure you’re eating really well – lots of whole foods, lots of chicken steak, sweet potatoes, brown and white rice and vegetables like broccoli, spinach and sugar snap peas have good carbs and lots of protein.

Tam said he was happy to stay “natural” and drug-free.

“I don’t want to look like a cow,” he says. “Everything is fun and wholesome. Obviously, this requires a lot to do because you have to put yourself in quite incredible conditions. You need to achieve about four to seven percent body fat. So you look extremely skinny. But obviously you look extremely good.

Tam is also a fitness coach. It helps people diet or get ready for a show.

Although he started hitting the gym at the age of 19, it has only been three years since he started focusing on bodybuilding.

“Last year I decided to try this sport,” Tam said.

“So I went to a regional exhibition, I came in fifth, which was good but not the best. So I went away for a few weeks and tweaked some poses, tweaked the body look, and then I’m came back and I came second in my area.

“Then I was invited to the British final last year and I actually won everything. Afterwards I was invited to the World Championships in Florence.
